KLu Open Day: Volkel, 2004
By Stefan Kuhn
Mar 30, 2004, 04:05

This years open day of the Royal Netherlands Air Force was held on June 18 and 19 at the airbase of Volkel in the Netherlands.

Volkel is the home base of three F-16 Squadrons (311 SQN, 312 SQN, and 306 Squadron). All those units are equipped with F-16A MLU (commonly designated F-16AM).

The main theme of the air show was the delivery of the first F-16A to the KLU in June 1976. To celebrate the occasion an instructional airframe (J-229) was displayed in a colour scheme similar to that of the original F-16 prototypes.

Highlights of the airshow were the Swiss PC-7 team, the Patroullie de France, the Frecce Tricolori and the Red Arrows.

Very impressing solo displays were made by a British Tornado GR.4, Royal Navy Sea Harrier FA.2, Swiss F-18C, German Navy Tornado, Belgian F-16, Dutch F-16 and the AH-64 of the KLU.

A further highlight was the airpower demo of the KLU in which an airfield attack was simulated using heliborne forces.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flights DC-3 and Spitfire as well as some other warbirds also added some spice to show.
