This September the Hellenic Air Force hosted another Airshow. Contrary to common belief, during the 1950's and 60's Airshows were very common in Greece, featuring visits - among others - from the Skyblazers and the Blue Angels, while the three (then) RHAF Acroteams made shows in the Athens International Airport at Hellinikon with crowds of over 200.000 people in attendance. Airshows took place also in various Airbases in Greece and over Greek cities as well. On the same time they performed all over Europe becoming famous for their expert flying in Le Bourget or Spangdahlem for example.
This year, thanks to the efforts of the HAF CO General Avlonitis, the traditional HAF Open Days in November were transferred to an earlier date in order to get advantage of the good September weather and organise a much larger Airshow with foreign participation. Over 250.000 people visited Tanagra on the final day alone making this an extremely memorable and interesting event which hopefuly will become a regular on the European Airshow circuit.

337 Mira has painted F-4E SRA "68-0506" in a special color scheme for the Archangel airshow. In the fin we see the current Squadron badge, with the 2 red stars and 3 yellow ones surrounding the Phantom... |
Here we see the whole aircraft. In the front we see the black Squadron badge from the F-86D era, in the middle the current Ghost scheme and in the back the current Squadron badge, with its special symbolism. The aircraft types and the dates that they served can also be seen. |
335 Squadrons second "Tiger" after F-104G 7151, A-7E 158825 was also present with the pilot's helmet in a Tiger scheme as well! |
339 Mira "Ajax" fin art can be seen in detail in this photograph. |
F-4E AUP "72-01507" can be seen here parked nest to the RF-4E. |
The two 1st TEEP (Attack Helicopter Battalion) Apaches performed an extraordinary display at very close distance to eachother and at very high speeds! One of the highlights for sure... |
It takes two to tango... |
AH-64A+ "ES-1014" was one of the the two present in the static display. |
C-47B KK-156 was delivered to the USAAF on November 24th 1944 wearing serial number 43-49479, while later it was used by the RAF before entering in Hellenic service in 1949! It now flies with 355 Mira, 1st Flight from Sedes Macedonia. |
Mirage F.1CG "105" served first with 334 Mira and after its disbandment moved to Tanagra to fly with 342 Mira. Its now wearing 342 Mira Squadron Badge at the fin its displayed opposite from the Officers Club at Tanagra |
Another ex 334 Mira machine, 114 is also present in the display... |
Along with 123 wich had the name of the Greek island "Delos" painted under its cockpit... It was nice to see the F.1's again... |
Now this was the scoop of the static display: the second ghost camouflaged F.1CG! 121 was much photographed but its pair remained out of the spotlight... The Ghost scheme was very effective but came late as the F.1CG's were approaching retirement, so it was not applied to the rest of the fleet. It used to carry the name "Crete" under the cockpit. |
EMB-145 AEW&C ERIEYE "671" wearing civil registration SX-BKP was also displayed. 380 Mira is completing its training and is approaching operational status in the next months. |
SAR AB.205A-1 "4511" from 358 Mira was also present at the static display. |
Inside a shelter Mirage 2000 EGM "235" is still wearing the TLP-97 nose art and is seen with live Exocet AM.39's, Super Matra 530's and Magic II's |
In the next shelter F-16C Block 52+ "537" from 340 Mira was seen displaying some of its weaponry which included among others HARM, AFDS, AMRAAM, while the JHMCS is also seen. CFT's are also on the plane. |
Mirage 2000 EGM "222" is seen here taking off. All Greek Mirages now wear the refueling probe at all times. The HAF CO has stated that their upgrade to -5 status is one of his priorities. |
222 is seen here taxiing in front of the spectators and the refueling probe is seen to advantage. |
The Hellenic Navy was also present with all 3 h/c types. AB.212 ASW "PN-31" can be seen here. |
C-27J "4117" is seen in its all gray scheme. The Spartan logo in the fin will be retained, although its not historically accurate as the ancient Spartan helmet had a horizontal crest. |
HN S-70B-6 Aegean Hawk "PN-59" is seen here right after the rain stopped on Friday around noon. |
In this close up we see the Penguin that the Aegean Hawk carries |
