Zaire/DR Congo since 1980
The last 15 years of the civil war in Congo have seen quite some use of air power as well - frequently at an unexpectedly (and certainly hitherto unknown) high level. Considering the size of the country and the number of involved fractions, as well as the complexity of this conflict, however, this is not surprising. This exclusive report was prepared on a basis of four years of intensive research, which enabled the authors to privde very in-depth information about composition and operations of involved air forces, but also about the general conduct of this war.

Uganda and Tansania, 1972 - 1979
In reaction to an Ugandan pre-emptive attack, in 1979, Tanzania launched a counter-invasion that was to result with removal of the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. The Tanzanians had no intentions to conquer and hold Uganda: this was therefore the first modern war fought solely with the aim of removal of an oppressive regime. The air power played a minor, but still an interesting role in this conflict.

Ogaden War, 1977-1978
Ogaden War was characteristic for both, its typical African post-colonial character, and for some of the most amazing changes of alliances of the whole Cold War: nevertheless, it saw some of the most vicious fighting in the air ever over the whole continent.

Mozambique, 1962-1992
The today largely forgotten war in Mozambique raged for over 30 years, first pitting local nationalist and leftist rebels against the Portuguese colonial authorities, and then the nationalist rebels against a leftist regime. Nevertheless, it is one of very few African wars of this kind that ever found an end.

Angola: Claims & Reality about SAAF Losses
Much was claimed about the losses of the South African Air Force during the war in Angola, with Angolan and - especially - Cuban sources frequently constructing "evidence" for downed SAAF Mirages. This practice became especially widespread in the recent years, with several cases known in which specific authors went so far to falsify even the narratives from Cuban pilots involved in that war.

Angola since 1961
The war in Angola broke out already in 1961, and began its history as a "classic" anti-colonial war, between Portuguese authorities and Conservative as well as Marxist-rebells. Eventually, it developed into a never-ending and extremely brutal story, involving a number of outside powers, and ended as "another forgotten African war", only in our days.

Congo, Part 1; 1960-1963
The bloody civil war in the Congo quickly took on a wider significance as outside forces became involved: for some time in the 1960s, Washington was so concerned about the Soviet involvement in this war, that it was more likely to intervene there but in Vietnam. Eventually, the UN took over, launching its first - and certainly the most controversial - military intervention ever.
